But the S-38 sounds a lot better on shortwave broadcasts, probably for two reasons: 1) it has a wider bandwidth and 2) it has AGC (which is needed when dealing with very strong broadcast signals). 73 Bill Bill Mearahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07662500663603350847noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7590176649168185428.post-60227292303299723412020-02-14T06:01:31.461-05:002020-02-14T06:01:31.461-05:00Bruce: Your S-38 story (in a post from a few year...Bruce: Your S-38 story (in a post from a few years ago) helped prevent me from getting rid of this receiver. Or for that matter, any of the many line operated "All American 5" AM receivers that were in use over the years. I'm glad that you have maintained yours. The one I have was a Christmas present when I was 12. Many memories of HCJB! When I was a kid I played around with my dad's old S-41W, which I read was the precursor to the S-38 series. One thing I remember about it was that it could cause massive TVI to the lower VHF channels because of all the LO radiation it had (this was well before cable TV)!
