CuriousMarc (AJ6JV) Goes to a Hamfest


Jean Shepherd once said that all of us at one point come to a cross-roads in our lives -- one road leads to success, the other to ham radio flea markets.  

As I watched this, I realized that CuriousMarc sounds like a ham.   Sure enough, some Googling revealed that his real name is Jean-Marc Verdiell and his ham radio callsign is AJ6JV. 

I knew Marc was one of us when, in the video, he opens up the teletype.  He says that the seller claimed that it still worked.  But Marc comments that he hopes that this is not true, so that they will be able to troubleshoot and fix the device.  FB.  That's the spirit.  

We are really lucky to have someone as successful and creative as Marc in the ranks of ham radio operators.  

Be careful with the high voltage Marc!

TRIGGER WARNING: Solid-Stating Old Tube (Thermatron) Gear (Including -- GASP -- R-390As)

Look at that.  Well, maybe some of you shouldn't. (I'm thinking of you Grayson.)  I found the Charles Smith YouTube channel while innocently looking for ideas on how to solid-state the HT-37 VFO assembly I recently bought on e-bay.  Charles Smith has some really great ideas in this area.  He solid-stated a Heath VF-1.  But he took it all to an extreme when he solid stated an R-390A.   Take a look at how he built the replacements for the thermatrons:  He used those plastic wall sockets that you screw into sheet-rock when you need to hang a picture.  This is real genius. He used the tube filament lines to carry DC to these new sockets.

He has videos on the HQ-170 (DEAN:  Just say NO!) and the SP-600.  He also covers the HQ-110, which is uncomfortably close to my HQ-100.

He has some great humor and wisdom in his videos: Procedures that are difficult or more trouble than they are worth are called "bugger-bears."  He advises that if your IF cans are stuck, you should "find a way to unstick them!"  Indeed you should!  He builds a cool jig to hold the IF section of the R-390A while you are working on it.  He provides similar protection (with two long screws) to the VF-1.  

Even though some of you will have to go to therapy after seeing all this, I say THREE CHEERS FOR CHARLES SMITH!

Grayson Evans KJ7UM on the Ham Radio Workbench Podcast

 
OM Grayson was on the HRWB podcast with George Zaf and company. This was a really informative and entertaining session.  For example, when asked if special precautions are needed when working with thermatrons, Grayson replies, "Well, try not to swallow anything... and don't sit on the thermatrons."  Words to live by my friends.  Grayson's story about cooking Tektronix scopes in a refrigerator re-purposed as an oven (after cleaning the 'scope with a Home Depot power washer) is the kind of practical advice that readers of this blog REALLY NEED!  

But seriously, I learned a lot just listening to Grayson talk about thermatrons with George and the HRWB crew.  

The interview includes nice shout-outs to SolderSmoke, SPRAT/G-QRP, and Electric Radio magazine.

HEAVY METAL! How to Handle HEAVY Boatanchors -- And Which is Heavier: R390 or DX-100?




Grayson: 

I was on 40 AM today and I mentioned to the guys your thoughts about the possible need for a block and tackle and a metal beam in your shack roof to help you deal with your R-390A.  They sympathized completely.  One fellow claimed he knows hams who are working out with weights just so they can handle their boatanchors.  Another guy said he is thinking of building a small crane, perhaps powered by his chain saw (yikes!).  A third fellow said he actually bought a thing called a "lifting table" from Harbor Freight.  

This got me to thinking:  How much do those R-390s really weigh? 

A MERE 85 pounds!  That's it?  Holy cow, the DX-100 has a listed shipping weight of 120 pounds!

Nice thing about a “regular” boat anchor (DX100, HT37, SX101, etc.) is that you can put it on its side and get fairly easy access to both sides, and all the components at once.  The problem with the R390 (and a lot of Collins military gear) is Collins worked hard to cram so much in a “small” space that you have to take whole sections apart to get at anything.  So you have to “flip” the chassis over, side, over, on its back, etc.  UGH.  To get at the RF front end components, you gotta take the front panel off before you can remove the RF chassis.  UGH

I know about the lifting table from harbor freight.  A really nice shack accessory.  Puts the rig at a better height to work on.  With a “lazy susan” thing on top, a nice arrangement!   Maybe next Christmas.
