This interview was a lot of fun. I too was smitten at an early age by the HW-101. I still have one on my operating table. We are all lucky that Will is working in an innovative way on these old rigs. Who can forget his shocking water and soap (followed by South Texas sunshine) approach to cleaning these often cruddy old rigs? Thanks Will and thanks Eric for doing this interview.

One of the more interesting QSO Today podcast subjects. The only Heathkit ham gear I own is the solid state HR-1680 receiver but my affection for it has dimmed tremendously because I consider any of my many homebrew receivers to be superior. The
ReplyDeleteHR-1680 tuning is simply way too sensitive which along with the fixed AGC circuit makes dialing in any CW or SSB signal a tremendous chore. However, I love my Heathkit Digital Alarm clock that never fails to wake me up to this day after 35 years of operation! My advice to N5OLA is to join us on the Sunrise CW net per the invitation below. --Walter KA4KXX

All of you are cordially invited to join us any morning starting at 1300Z on 7123 kHz and check-in (QNI) to an exciting net that has been running continuously since 1991. You will never meet a more polite bunch and we have a different Net Control Station (QNN) for each day of the week, Monday thru Sunday. We are informal rag-chewers but we start with RST, sky condition, current temperature, expected high temperature, and then go from there. Most of the Net Controllers readily QRS and the typical speed of many of us geezers is about 12 WPM, so usually easy copy and we could use some fresh faces and fists, especially if you would like to try your hand as an occasional substitute net controller! Especially impressive is our website at http://qsl.net/srn/,or just search for “Sunrise Net.” Check-ins are logged on the website every day, it is great fun to see how often you can QNI, and perfect attendance gets your name in red on the monthly list!
