  2. Bill, Pete,
Awesome podcast and Congrats on 10 years. By far this is my favorite podcasts. I would like to propose the first bylaw for the IBEW. It is "Thou shalt not propagate information without first, for yourself, collecting, evaluating and presenting data to substantiate and reinforce your claim of information.” Or something in those words.

  3. Bill and Pete -

I don't know about the magic Kon-tiki hydrogen generating powder but I suspect it's similar to the powder used in US Military MRE (Meals, Ready to Eat) heaters. The MRE heater that comes with most MREs is basically a plastic bag with some magic powder in it. Add a little water and heat (and hydrogen gas) result. Punch in "mre heater" into a Youtube search box for more "info".

  4. Hi Guys,

First I never had an MRE but ate a lot of C Rations vintage 1965 at Chu Lai, South Vietnam. We had "heat tabs" that came in the case of C Rations along with the very clever fold over can opener. I got pretty good and taking the expended cans and converting them to mini-stoves.

There is nothing finer than having hot "beanies and weenies" or "turkey noodle loaf" for breakfast. Somehow the hamburger patties always tasted like they were packed in cosmoline. ( A variant of axle grease.)

Edward I really like your idea that you can't comment until you have actually built the project and tested it. Most of the negative comments seem to come from individuals who are merely repeating "ghost stories".

    1. I was fond of the green fried eggs in the C rations. Umm, delicious. Especially cold on a cold night.

  5. I think I would be a little more careful before I anounced to the world that I was looking for "magic white powder" ;-)

I suspect I know what it was though. It was probably Calcium Hydride https://goo.gl/6DZ7N3. It was used by the military in WWII to lift antennas for the Gibson Girl emergency radios https://goo.gl/nSVGN6. Catalogs from Fair Radio Sales is where I learned about this https://goo.gl/7kSNN3. Unfortunately they seem to be out now but at least that listing identifies the chemical used. I didn't find a whole lot of sources in a Google search but I did find one http://goo.gl/0DLw9b

    Good luck!

    1. Thanks Leif! You may have just made ham radio (and boating!) significantly more dangerous!

    2. Hi Pete and Bill

Number 179 was a great edition of Soldersmoke, thanks for all these years. I have to say, i think the lexicon you outline came up a bit short however. I think Pete's term "noodling", or is it "Knudeling" or even "nuudling" should have a place in the lexicon. After all the more Noodling the less Basta.
