I found this term intriguing.  I think we should consider including it in the SolderSmoke Lexicon.  Steve?  BTW, I agree on the designation of Pete N6QW as the Shifu.

AI Overview

In the context of electronics, Shifu (师傅) generally refers to a skilled craftsman, technician, or master tradesperson, such as a master electrician, repair technician, or electronics expert. It is a Chinese term denoting respect for someone with high-level technical expertise in areas like welding, circuit design, or device repair.

Here is more info on the origin of the term and its useage:

Thanks Mike!

  1. I think the Brit term "Boffin" is better.
    Maybe "Resident Boffin"?

  2. I think either term will work. Churchill might agree (re: "The Wizard War")

The first time I heard the term "Shifu" was years ago at KDI. We had a team of absolutely top-notch Vietnamese technicians who gave me that as a nickname. They explained that it meant "master" and the Shifu was the one who sat at the head of the table, the only one to speak. I said I was definitely not a Shifu. I would tell them, "We are only ripping-off Armstrong and the real Shifu's!". Intrigued , they asked "Who's this Armstrong??" This question lead to more questions and eventually Amateur Radio Classes held after work. We got 6 new Technicians !

Great video on the origin of the term, Bill.

With 372 YouTube videos, Pete, N6QW is definitely the Shifu, the Resident Boffin!

  3. Yes, I think we can use either or both terms. Boffin has, I think, been in the lexicon for a while. Shifu is cool because of its ancient Chinese roots. 73 Bill N2CQR
