Earthquake Hits Central Italy
A 6.3 earthquake woke us up last night. Rome was shaking quite a bit. Looks like the epicenter was up in Abruzzo, near L'Aquila. News reports indicate that buildings have collapsed and people have been killed up there.
Glad to see that you made it through the quake OK Bill! I hope that your QTH made it without dammage. The AP wire this morning says 70 dead, 1500 injured and 10's of thousands are now homeless. USGS puts the quake at mag. 6.3 about 70 miles north east of Rome. Do the Italian hams have emergency responce groups that help out with comms in a disaster?
Eeesh. Even to a jaded California Bay Area resident, a 6.3 is a serious quake. That wouldn't be pleasant even here, where building codes are pretty good about keeping construction standards high enough to survive severe shaking. The news reports I've read thus far aren't very good, it seems like many of these older homes and buildings just callapsed. I hope that all is well with you and yours.
Thanks for all the expressions of concern. No damage in Rome, but it is a real tragedy up in Abruzzo. More info on the quake here: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsww/Quakes/us2009fcaf.php#details
We all hope that you, your family, and your friends and acquaintances are all OK after this tragedy.
