Flying drones with Billy.  Amazing tech out there.  In the 50 buck range with video cameras and facial recognition and tracking.  Check out Air Pix.

Bill's Bench:

Active CW filter in uBITX.
Hi-Per-Mite from 4 State QRP.  Easy to do. Works well.
uBITX to 5 W level.

S-38E adventure.
Replaced antenna input coil BUT -- it came from an earlier S-38 and doesn't resonate.
So I bought a junker on e-bay and will take the E model coil out of that one.
Had to re-string the dial!  And add rosin to it from Maria's old violin.
BFO was not working.  Bad buzz sound.
So:  Re-cap, Re-tube, Re-string, Re-align, Re-build power supply.
Shortwave sounds good.  Nice to hear music coming from our machines.

  1. Thanks you guys! I always enjoyed chatting with Bill WAY back in the 1980s when I was in Maryland. WHO ELSE remembers Beehive trimmer caps? LOL. Steak and Kidney pie with GRITS - perfect!!

  2. Hi Bill and Pete,
I follow this blog almost daily and enjoy all of the info you provide. And, I follow the podcast conversations and the back and forth banter. Please keep it going.

I got my Novice ticket when I was 14 (WN5BQQ - Lubbock, Texas) and have been continuously licensed for 58 years (now N0OU – Kansas City, Missouri). By the way, Pete, my first transistor was a 2N107 because I couldn’t afford a CK722. You must have been in pretty tall cotton to afford that baby!

Thanks to both of you for sharing your love of electronics, ham radio and mentoring.

  3. Again a great podcast.

Thanks for the tip regarding re-string the dial. I'm currently working on a old tube receiver from the grandparents from the XYL which needs to be re-stringed. And as expected, after more then 60 years it slips. So I will go to local musicalinstrument store to get some violin rosin.

  4. You think its interesting now (SW bands) you should have seen it in the 60s , the cold war. The one I remember to this day was Radio Havana Cuba. They would get on and just cuss us up and down and sideways, telling us Pres Kennedy was a criminal, on and on. I couldn't believe my ears ! And I was in California, imagine what it was like to be in Florida to hear that sort of thing !The Chinese, Japanese were very busy, Radio Moscow, all had very angry messages for us. Even Radio Vietnam was on ! My BFO worked fine and 12ax7s were all over, 35w4s, 50c5s, on and on. Grounding it was definitely a scary thing to do though. My dad had gotten it, wanted to be a ham. He sold it to me realizing that I'd probably wear it out (or blow it up). Radio Australia. N6GRG
