Bill's Bench

Bill's report from SolderSmoke Shack South: The tropics:  What this means.  Guapo wouldn't  go out when the sun was overhead.

Skies not great for astronomy now.  But we see a lot of satellites, and meteors.

Antenna developments:   1/4 vertical on a fishing pole.

Lightning suppression coming for the building. Lightning suppressors.  Got 2.  Good video from the IMSAI guy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7EyABPuNDMA Argon gas suppresion tubes.Need to crimp!

Hurricane prevention. Metal storm curtains.

Thinking of solar panels. 12 panels, 5 kW system.  Probably without batteries.  What do you think?

A golf cart.

New PC.  BeeLink.  Very tiny! (palm of your hand)   24 inch screen. Works well https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BVFKN7ZL?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title&th=1

A very satisfying fix on the 15/10 rig -- loose connection to RF amp.  The highly suspect Ramsey Kit Amp was NOT the culprit!  Got to use the new Rigol DS-1102.  A fun fix. Will build a second CCI amp.

Digital Selective Calling -- listening to ships and shore stations on HF.  https://soldersmoke.blogspot.com/2024/10/monitoring-maritime-radio-messages-with.html

SHAMELESS COMMERCE:  Our blogs and the podcast are in danger!  Pete is already on a permanent  blog hiatus.  I have seen a big decline in readership.  Frankly, if no one is reading or listening, we just may decide not to do it anymore.  We don't want to do this.  So please, link to the blogs.  Talk up the blog and podcast on your own blogs and social media.

Parts Candy Test Leads are back as our sponsor.  Pete has them.  Dean has them, I have them in two different countries!     DON'T SCRIMP WITH A CRIMP!

  1. Hopefully your stats cover RSS feeds. That's where I read this blog and Pete's.

  2. Don't stop!

I've been looking for you lately. I think the more podcasts you do, the more people will look for you. But if you drop off the routine, people will likewise stop looking for you.

  3. I remember you listening while jogging through Tulsa. We were thrilled! I would like to do more regular podcasts, but they are kind of hard to schedule. For a long while, the blog seemed to be filling the void between podcasts, but lately we are not getting many readers. I guess reading is more difficult than watching videos. Maybe even cat videos. 73 Bill

  4. Hi all, I'm sorry you feel that your efforts are not appreciated by the wider readership of the Internet. I assure you that I appreciate them, but I wonder if maybe you are blogging and podcasting for the right reason?

On the one hand, you are concerned by the drop off in traffic, but on the other, you (rightly) say that you can't be bothered with marketing because you're retired. I would offer the view that maybe you need to review why you do these things.

Like all the things we do as human beings - certainly in our free time - we do things that we like to do. More accurately, we spend significant amounts of time doing the things that amuse/educate/(frustrate) us. If you aren't enjoying doing it - STOP. If you are still enjoying it - DO IT, but do it because you want to do it, not because you want people to read it.

  5. I second the comment of M5KVK. I certainly hope that you will find the motivation to continue, as well as Pete with his blog. I have followed you guys since day one and love it. Soldersmoke is unique in that there are no other podcast that gets in to the technical stuff in the way you guys do. My project list is a mile long, but given having kids, commuting to work and a house in the "outback" I live my homebrew life through you guys since I can't find the time.....yet! :-) You're awesome and much needed on the interwebs. 73's de SM2UJW Chris somewhere in the wilds of northern Sweden

  7. For selfish reasons, I like Billy's observation. while listening to the podcast I heard the call to action to build the Direct Conversion Receiver and started ordering parts right away. I came to the blog more times than I can count to look at the images of Dean and Bill's builds and the Hackaday page.

I am wondering if something about posting those circuits and the videos related to the build helped route more views your way. Bill, your post of my video has netted mee 408 total views. That is cool. Even better, is all the emails from Farhan, Dean, you, Walter and more!

Bill is right, if you have a blog or web pages, add a link to Bill, Dean, and Pete's blogs!

  8. Don't do it Bill, don't take Soldersmoke away from us. I've been listening since my college days and I still enjoy every bit of both the podcast and the site.

The blog and the podcast are a treasure trove of knowledge which I hope can inspire future generations of homebrewers. At least I know I frequently go back or come across an old blog post. We don't tell you enough how much we appreciate all the work you put in!

I don't have a blog or a website to share your link but I'll help spread the word when I can
