SOTA Antennas -- FREE Antenna Modelling Software

 Given that the audience of SolderSmoke is more angled towards home brew and self construction, I wonder if you would mind informing your listeners of a very valuable antenna design website that despite the high level of quality work put in, is not getting very many visitors and may therefore be taken down.

Despite SOTA being part of the name this is of use for all portable operators and indeed home stations as well. It is a series of online tools that not only defines wire lengths for building but also gives EZ-NEC like diagrams of the expected radiation patterns.
My favourite little jewel is in the off-centre-fed dipole section where the positioning of the feed-point is varied automatically to show you the bands the antenna will resonate on. So as an Example a 40m OCFD with a feed-point at 33/66% will not resonate on 15m however one with the feed-point located somewhere near 18/82% will.

The website currently supports Linked-Dipoles, Off Centre Fed Dipoles, End Fed Half Waves, Delta Loops, Half Squares and Moxon antennas. It could be extended to support others but that is unlikely if the current site is not used more.

Paul VK3HN's Video on Scratch-Building and SOTA


It was great to get a comment from Paul VK3HN -- this led to a re-establishment of contact.  Apparently Google knows who I have been e-mailing, so this great video appeared on my YouTube screen.  Thanks Google! 

-- Great to hear Paul's shout out to Pete Juliano N6QW, and Pete's concept of noodling. 

-- Paul's emphasis on testing each stage independently is really important. 

-- Wow, ferric chloride!  It is great to see someone doing this (instead of just sending Gerber files to China). 

-- Books.  This reminds me that I have to get Drew Diamond's books. 

-- Paul's comment on the usefulness of a general coverage receiver.  Right on target Paul.  

-- On the test gear, we can now add the TinySA Ultra.  And you don't have to win the Lotto! 

-- Finally, Paul is absolutely right on the need to constantly update and publish changes to schematics. I am guilty of not doing this. (I hang my head in shame.)   This became a problem in our simple High-School receiver project -- I would make changes to circuits and fail to communicate these changes to Dean KK4DAS.  Paul's method would have solved this problem.

A Low-Power (QRP) Contact from Australia to Spain (with video from both sides!)

A recent comment on the blog put me back in contact with an old friend of SolderSmoke:  Paul VK3HN.  Paul is an amazing homebrewer -- it was great to hear from him.   He sent along this video of a portable Summit on the Air activation from the Melbourne Australia area.   Paul managed to contact Ignacio EA2BD in Spain.  Ignacio was also running low power with a portable set up.  The remarkable thing is that we have video from both sides of the contact.  FB!  Thanks to Paul and Ignacio.

Dhaka Jack Moves to France

Jack Welch AI4SV has been an important member of the SolderSmoke community for many years.  I remember fondly our Straight Key Night CW contact in which he told me that my HT-37 had "presence" even on CW.  His thoughtful (!) piece on time crystals was also quite memorable.  Jack has finally settled down (a bit) after a string of foreign assignments.  He has landed happily in France, in a villa, on a vineyard, surrounded by wild boar and hunters.  FB OM.

I've packed up the shack and moved from Cyprus to France, so no more 5B4APL. To obtain a French callsign, you have to submit proof that you've lived in France for three months, so I'm F/AI4SV until December and then we'll see. 

I'm not sure how long we will be here, but probably a few years at least. Since we know next to nothing about French real estate, we are renting for the first couple years -- a château on the outskirts of Bordeaux. Before you think that I've come down with delusions of grandeur, I should point out that in that area, château means an old, stone house that is hard to heat in the winter -- and particularly difficult to run wiring around. Antennas and grounding are going to be particularly challenging. The selling point for the house was not so much my hobby as its location in wine country. In fact, there is a Sauterne my house's name on it (although I have nothing to do with production of the wine, that's in professional hands).

Back in the early days of Soldersmoke, Bill used to occasionally mention the dreaded Italian wild boar, the cinghiale. I didn't think that would ever be terribly relevant to me, but it is. A couple days after arriving in the Bordeaux suburbs, a sanglier (French cousin of the cinghiale) strolled across a road as I came around a bend. We almost had a month-long supply of bacon, but I managed to steer around him.

Since it will be a while before all our belongings arrive and even longer to set up a proper station, I have focused on operating QRP in the field and activating SOTA summits. That has gone well, but I aborted my most recent attempt when I ran into a bunch of orange-clad rifle-toting hunters who were combing the mountain in search of sanglier. Apparently it's a big thing here. I decided to survive to activate the peak on another day.

Finally, I have attached a journal article, which at first glance doesn't seem to have a lot to do with radio, but kind of does. It turns out that both the human ear and violins have non-linear characteristics that cause them to function as audio frequency mixers. Looking through the article, you'll find some familiar looking formulas about mixing products, harmonics and resonance. If Bill wants to get away from ICs, perhaps his next rig could include a 17th Century Italian violin as a mixing stage.

Yes, the Cingales.   Hunting season was always a bit of an uneasy time.  We used to dress the kids up in reflective vests.   One time we found a very drunk Italian hunter wandering around with a shotgun (that was kind of scary).  We would know when hunting season started by the sound of gunfire in the morning.    Kind of reminded me of other places!  

In retirement I have gotten back into VWS.  We are having a lot of fun.  Just yesterday 30 students at the Thomas Jefferson High School got their Technician licenses. They will soon build Direct Conversion receivers. 

As for mixing, what you sent reminded me of my early confusion on this subject.  In the SS book I describe the "Terzo Suono"  -- it is really just an additive heterodyne.  I confused it 
with a true mixing product.  But it was an educational confusion.

When I was putting this podcast up on YouTube, I needed a picture of Mike Herr WA6ARA who was my guest on this episode.  I found a picture of Mike activating a summit... THE SUMMIT OF WIZARD ISLAND!   That is Wizard Island (above).  Mike and his wife are shown at the summit (below). 


I really liked talking to Mike, and to listening again to our conversation.  But I realize now I should have asked him about parachutes!  I'd been talking about the great picture of the Phoenix lander under canopy as it descended to Mars.  Mike made and tested parachutes for NASA!

A Double Sideband Transmitter from France -- F4IET's "Master Robert"


The Radio Gods seem to be steering us toward Double Sideband.  A few days ago I got an e-mail from Alain F4IET.   We had him on the SolderSmoke blog two years ago, talking about his French backyard pandemic Field Day.  His recent e-mail reminded me of his very fine homebrew DSB transmitter, which is his only rig and with which he has worked the world. 

The rig is named for the fellow -- Robert F6EUZ -- who is Alain's teacher from the local radio club. 

Alain's rig was shown to the world in the G-QRP club's Winter 2020 issue of SPRAT (SPRAT 185).  Once again, let me note:  If you are not subscribing to SPRAT, you are just WRONG.  Join G-QRP and start receiving SPRAT:  http://www.gqrp.com/join.htm

Alain gives some nice shout-outs to Pete N6QW,  Charlie ZL2CTM, and Basanta VU2NIL, all of whom provided advice and counsel on this project.  So think about it:  the Master Robert rig was built in France under the guidance of a French Elmer, with advice from hams in the U.S., New Zealand, and India, and was featured in journal of the British QRP club.  That, my friends is the International Brotherhood at its best. 

As I read about Alain's rig, I found myself thinking about the Direct Conversion receiver projects underway around the world.   The Vienna Wireless Society's Maker Group, is, for example, building a simple DC receiver.   It would be relatively easy to pair up a rig like the Master Robert with a DC receiver (the VFO could be the only stage common to both transmit and receive) to make a simple phone transceiver.  That kind of rig was my first phone transceiver.  Alain reports that he is currently working on a second version of the Master Robert.  It will be a transmitter-receiver (TRX) and will be used in SOTA operations.

SolderSmoke FDIM Interview: Adam K6ARK and his 2.6 gram Mini-Pixie SMD Transceiver


I've not bee a big fan of the super-simple Pixie transceiver, but Adam K6ARK could make me a believer.

The video above shows Adam's tiny Pixie in action in the California desert.  His rig is about the size of a postage stamp and weighs about 2.6 grams. FB Adam. 

Adam did a lot better with his Pixie than I did with my far larger and more complicated SST transceiver. He also did better than I did on 40 when I was using my ET-2 (two FET) transceiver. 

I liked how Adam recorded in the field the CW from his rig, I also liked his key (!) and his EFHW antenna and "tuner."  Adam's ability to cope with no CW sidetone was also admirable.

Colin M1BUU's Homebrew Manhattan SST

 

Wow, especially on St. Patrick's day I think it is appropriate to say " 'tis a thing of beauty. "

Colin did a great job on his homebrew version of the SST transceiver. It looks like his is on 30 meters.   I especially liked his description of the troubleshooting that followed the construction.  the assist provided by AA7EE's blog was especially cool, and demonstrates the long-lasting power of internet-shared tribal knowledge. 

Colin wrote (on Facebook):  

I was inspired by Bill and his adventure with the SST-20, so I started gathering a few parts last year to build a Manhattan SST. I did a joint SOTA activation with a fellow homebrewer ham at the end of January and we started talking about classic portable CW rigs, it turned out that we both had an SST build on our 'list'. I was challenged to build the SST for the next joint SOTA activation!
It took a lot of effort and a few late nights but I did manage to produce a rig capable of making QSOs for a joint SOTA activation of Fair Snape Fell, G/SP-007. I'd done a solo activation of Pendle Hill G/SP-005 a few days before with the rig for a trial run and I discovered that the AF was very low. After some troubleshooting I noticed that I'd soldered the LM386 gain set capacitor to an incorrect pad. Doh! I fixed my error and the rig had much more gain.
I found that with the improved AF gain, the rig would squeal if the gain was turned up. I was ready to give up really, but after a cool off period, I began researching the issue and it turns out that it's very common and indeed I found posts from 1997 about it! It seems as though my recreation was so faithful to the original, I'd included the original flaws too! I added in a 0.1uF cap and resistor connected to pin 5 of the AF amp chip as per the suggestion on Dave AA7EE's blog and now the squealing has stopped.
I'd made 14 QSOs during the joint SOTA activation, so I considered my challenge to have been met! It's been a bit of an epic build!

VK3HN's Amazing Summit Prowler 9 Homebrew Transceiver - A Masterpiece of Miniaturization (VIDEO)


I was wondering what Paul VK3HN was up to. Now we know: the Summit Prowler 9 transceiver. 

This is yet another amazing rig by Paul, with GREAT documentation.   

I was impressed by those bandpass filters.  I will try to do something similarly robust on my 17/12 rig. 

Paul's miniaturization of this rig is really astonishing.  I would go nuts trying to keep it this small. I just couldn't do it. 

Look closely at the boards he uses.  They look like printed circuit boards, but with all the components and all the soldering on one side.  This is very smart -- this makes it easier to troubleshoot and to change components.  

I was glad to see at least one NE-602 in there.  FB.

Thomas K4SWL -- SOTA Activation on Bearwallow Mountain, North Carolina (video)


Thomas put out a very nice video of his recent activation of Bearwallow Mountain in western North Carolina.  Really nice.   It was fun to see the QSOs and the logging as he did it.  Very cool that he worked Christian F4WDN --- Jack NG2E also worked F4WDN on a recent activation in the Shenandoah area of Virginia.

Jack NG2E's Winter SOTA Marathon in the Shenandoah

  

Our friend Jack NG2E is a homebrewer.  He is also a Summits-On-The-Air guy. He does much of his SOTA operations along Skyline Drive in the Shenandoah National Park. Jack's Story Map method of documenting this SOTA trip is very cool. 

Elisa and I are frequent visitors to this amazing park.   Both my kids went to college in the Shenandoah valley, and the park starts just one hour by car west of us.  It is a beautiful place. The Appalachian Trail runs through the park;  we have crossed paths with "through hikers" who are walking from Maine to Georgia. I really like Jack's use of both HF and 2 meter FM.  This makes me think that I should blow the dust off my Baofeng HT and bring it out to the Shenandoah next time we visit.  Jack's 20 meter CW contact with Christian F4WBN in the Pyrenees added a nice element of transatlantic mountain symmetry.

I know that Jack wants to include a homebrew rig in his SOTA operations.  That would significantly add to the already very high level of operational coolness.  Perhaps Colin M1BUU or Paul VK3HN could provide some suggestions or encouragement in this area.
