The video above is really a lot of fun.
We are approaching the 20th anniversary of the SolderSmoke Podcast. Our first upload was August 21, 2005. This has caused me to reflect a bit on those who are responsible for making our podcast what it is. So, these guys are definitely among the responsible.
Wow, MIT grads. Is Phil W1PJE listening?
Dewey, Cheatham & Howe! Right in the window!
How computers in cars have killed the joy. "There is just not a lot to be in love with anymore."
"The show sounds like the kind of thing you'd hear on a high school PA system." Indeed.
Other influences: Jean Shepherd. HCJB. Radio Moscow. More to follow.

Met Tom Magliozzi one day coming out of the T near Harvard Square. He was a bit startled to get a "great show!" comment from me - I think he was on his way to the Tasty for some greasy lunch :)

I also had a car repaired at Ray's Good News Garage in Cambridge. They really did have a sign over the counter that goes deep: "Whatever is wrong with your car, it will cost at least $100 to fix, if that's what is wrong."
ReplyDeleteThe sign for "Dewey,Cheetham & Howe" is visible in Google Street view (captured July 2019). Recall seeing it years ago when visiting the area. We lost Tom way too soon. No matter where we were, maybe tooling around in the car, we would tune in---handy knowledge considering it was a '76 Pinto!
ReplyDeleteWhen podcasts started to become "a thing" I discovered Car Talk and listened each week until it all came to a sad end.
ReplyDeleteIt didn't seem to matter that few of the cars discussed were available over here.

Ahh I loved those guys. I would have loved to make a similar podcast but then iT related. I have quite the stories from working at the Apple Genius Bar.
ReplyDeleteDin't have a partner who I could bounce off with. Most iT Guys have little sense of humor at least the kind a normal person would find funny...
