Daytime Occultation of Venus TODAY! LUNCHTIME (on East Coast)

Thanks to my Michael EI0CL for alerting us to this.  It will happen today, very conveniently at lunchtime on the East Coast of North America.  I may have to bring my Soviet binoculars to work.

Details here:  http://spaceweather.com/

It has already been a nice day for astronomy here in the wilds of Northern Virgina.  National Public Radio on Sunday alerted me to the fact that Mars is high in the pre-dawn sky.  Our friend Armand e-mailed alerting me to possible clear skies this morning.  The leaves are down and no longer obstructing my view of the Southern sky.  With my six inch telescope I got a very nice view of Jupiter and the four Galilean moons.  We are pretty far away from Mars at this point, so I could see no surface feaures, but it is always nice to see that distinctively red disk. And Venus is poised to disappear behind the moon.

Good luck with Venus and the Moon.  Please send in reports.

And speaking of occultations, check this one out (thanks to Farhan for the alert):

The moon passed between Nasa's Deep Space Climate Observatory and the Earth, allowing the satellite to capture this rare image of the moon's far side in full sunlight. We normally don't see this side of the moon. As the moon is tidally locked to the earth and doesn't rotate, we only ever see the one face from the earth. Awesome shot!

Where is Sunspot Cycle 25?

The other day I was complaining to Pete N6QW that 17 meters still seems to be in very poor shape.  I can hear 6Y6Y around mid day, but I don't often hear Europeans.  I did year my friend Mike EI0CL yesterday on 17, but conditions were not good.  Pete asked, "Where is Cycle 25?"  Good question. The Space Weather Center has the answer.

Their Solar Cycle Progression page is up-to-date.  With the slider below each chart you can go back as far as 1750.  Check out Cycle 19.  I was born near the peak (TRGHS).  Pete was on the air during that cycle. Cycle 23 also looked pretty good. I was out in the Azores then (2000-2003) -- no wonder I could work VK and ZL with a 5 watt DSB rig.

I like the little solar conditions widget that has appeared in the left hand column of this page, and I am grateful to the provider,  but the widget just doesn't update regularly.  So I think I'm going to switch to a link from the Space Weather Prediction Center that shows the numbers we really need: Solar Flux Index (SFI), Sunspot Number (SN), A index, K index.  (Please let me know what you think about this change.)

Here is the link to the Solar Cycle Progression Charts (be sure to use the sliders):

Thanks to Steve Wright EI5DD.  I had the great good fortune of running into my friend Michael EI0CL on the 17 meter band recently.  Mike mentioned that he had been talking to Steve.  So Steve is in good company.

Steve also sent me a useful Solar Indices Data Card, suitable for lamination.  You can download it here:

M0NTV's Latest Breadbox Rig -- The Radio Gods Have Spoken (TRGHS)!

Tony G4WIF sent me this video from Nick M0NTV.  It presents Nick's latest Bread Bin project -- "The Optimizer."

-- I really like the Bread Box enclosures.  And leaving the b and the d on the box is just brilliant.  These letters now stand for BiDirectional!  They even appear symmetrical.  TRGHS!

-- The switch for a tuning tone is a great idea.  I still have to plug my Maplin AF sig gen into the mic jack to do this.  FB.

-- I too have the connector on the back for keying the outboard linear amplifier.  (Shhh! Don't tell G-QRP!)

-- As for the bidirectional TIA amps.  I'm really glad that someone else is using these circuits.  Wes's article came out in 2009 and concluded with a call for someone to build a complete rig with these circuits.  I wonder how many rigs like this have been made.  It is a great circuit.   One thing I would suggest for Nick:  Wes's article points out that you CAN have higher gain in one direction than you have in the other.  Just use resistor values in the chart provided in the 2009 article.  You could have an amp with 15 db in the transmit direction and 24 db in the receive direction.  BTW:  I have been getting a lot of help from Alan W2AEW and Farhan VU2ESE on how to use the NanoVNA to confirm the input and output impedances on solid state amplifiers.

-- For many years I had the same map of the Moon in my shack.  I hope that map makes it to the new house Nick.

-- Finally, I was really surprised to hear EI0CL calling CQ during Nick's demo of the receiver.  That is Michael Higgins out in Galway.   Michael was one of my regular contacts when I was out in the Azores.  He is a truly amazing guy.  He is mentioned frequently in my "SolderSmoke -- Global Adventures in Wireless Electronics" book.  TRGHS.

The Galway Radio Experimenters Club

My old friend Mike EI0CL used to remind me that hams in Ireland are granted not just an amateur radio license, but an amateur radio experimenter's license, with an emphasis on experimentation. I think we can see that emphasis in the newsletter of the club.  It has a remarkably high level of technical content.  Check it out, and look at more information on the club:

Here is their latest newsletter:

Pete N6QW's PSST rig is mentioned on Page 4 of the Winter 2021 edition. TRGHS.

Thanks to John EI7GL for alerting us to this gem via his FB blog

Pete's Bench
Sprat Article
BITX 40 Fun
ZL2BMI Rig
Paraset.   Three tubes!  Almost an ET-3!

Bill's Bench
ET-2 Adventure over,  Rig on the wall
Final QSO count. 20   3 "random"
Last QSO with AA8OZ
Lessons learned:  100 mW not the problem. Crystal Control cramps your style.
N0WVA regen amazingly effective.
Tried for the Sunrise Net.  Walter sent me some crystals.

On to the uBITX.
Accidentally wiped out calibration and BFO settings.
Had to do recalibration and reset BFO.
Learned a lot about the rig.
How they did CW and how they do it now. Shift TX?  Or shift RX?  Or just shift BFO on RX?
How all the signals end up as upper sideband.  Only one BFO freq.  Very cool.
TalentCell 12 V Lithium Ion 3 AmpHour battery. Size of a deck of cards.
Inspired by Peregrino -- I ordered EFHW Tuner from QRP Guys.
Homebrew Straight Keys

Antuino upgrade
SMT soldering.
Back to Arduino Nano and the IDE.
A very cool tool.
Antuino filter analysis.
Version 6 of uBITX out.

The "Watt Meter" DC power meter.  Very useful.  8 bucks.  LINK:
