Arduino is all nice and powerful but PICAXE will do all the things listed in the article cheaper and easier (programming).

The smallest PICAXE costs a couple of bucks and will do the most amazing stuff along with the simplest stuff. For example: Have a project that requires several timers? Why use 555s and a bunch of parts when you can simply program up an 08M2 chip to handle all of them?
How about a digital voltmeter for the blind that reads out in Morse? 50 lines of code.
Only a half-dozen components needed to get going with PICAXE, including the chip and the programming interface!
