Sad about Mr. Dobson. Like you I purchased a dobsonian, an 8" telescope, back in the mid-90s. It was affordable yet powerful and so easy to use. Regardless of all the bells and whistles of the computer driven things now (where you can set it up, go to bed, and wake up the next morning with a slideshow of galactic snapshots -- the computer had fun at least!), this simple scope is so convenient to just haul out to the yard and go. It's a great way to learn constellations and impress your neighbors too. It makes it a very social hobby and more accessible, sort of like simple QRP rigs are to ham radio.
