You can build a PHSNA (Poor Ham's Scalar Network Analyzer), and in addition to sweeping and plotting filters, checking SWR, etc., you can also characterize crystals. Farhan has built one (http://www.hfsignals.org/index.php/Scalar_Network_Analyzer)-- what better endorsement do you need? ;-)
In response to popular demand, "SolderSmoke -- Global Adventures in Wireless Electronics" is now available as an e-book for Amazon's Kindle.

The two versions are identical, except for a minor difference in the paper used. That's why the prices are a bit different.
