Indeed a thing of beauty. I have one that was neglected in a shed. Bit of a clean up, dial cord restring and tube replacement later I have a superbly sensitive triple conversion receiver that gives my TS890 a run for its money. 73 G4GZG.
ReplyDeleteWhy I Never Had a Drake 2-B
ReplyDeleteFrom the CPI Inflation Calculator:
$279.95 in 1960 is equivalent in purchasing power to about $2,587.33 today. The dollar had an average inflation rate of 3.71% per year between 1960 and today, producing a cumulative price increase of 824.21%.
This means that today's prices are 9.24 times higher than average prices since 1960, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics consumer price index. A dollar today only buys 10.82% of what it could buy back then.

Bill, your podcast/blog postings about SSDRA and the 2-B have singlehandedly driven the price of those items way beyond zebra! I was lucky to score a nice copy of SSDRA in the ARRL auction a couple of years ago, and amazingly, I only had to pay about $20 for it. No one bid against me for it. I did see a 2-B with Q-mult/spkr at the Findlay, OH swap a couple of years ago, but he wanted WAY too much for it, I'm sure having heard about it on your podcasts.
ReplyDeleteIn any event, I haven't had any tube gear in my shack since I briefly owned a Drake 4-B line in the early 80's, and I have not equipment nor stock of tubes to support any such nonsense. :-)
When the ARRL recently did a reprint of EMRFD a while ago, I jumped at it, even though I had the original print with the CD of programs. The reprint came with a free electronic copy of SSDRA! So now I have a print copy, as well as a searchable edition on the PC.
