Soldering to Aluminum with Mineral Oil

Hack-A-Day has a potentially useful workshop tip.   Has anyone tried this?

  1. Hi Bill,

I heard about this many years ago and tried it out. I used a 100-Watt soldering iron with a 3/8 inch tip. It worked, but it was very messy and not very practical, in my opinion.

  2. Why bother with the messy oil? I just use a large, hot enough iron to keep a blob of solder molten. Then use an X-acto knife to scratch up the surface of the aluminum through the solder blob.
