The New York Times reported today that you would need HALF A MILLION high definition TVs to display just one image from the Roman Space Telescope in full. Wow.

4 billion bucks seems like a awful lot of money for something that wont benefit you or I in a direct and meaningful way. It is science for science sake.
ReplyDeleteIt is impossible to say what benefits we will see from the space program until years later, but there have been many. Many of these are medically related stemming from materials research. One I can personally point to is the laser gyro work we did in the Shuttle Guidance Program circa 1977-79. Solid State Lasers were the Holy Grail at the time, but still too unreliable--we ended up using strap-down gyros---but these lasers were developed further for medical work. In 2015 I had my vision restored in both eyes by laser corneal transplant. There is no way that this medical technology would have been developed if these seed efforts were not undertaken.
