My AI QSL Card: Wood Boxes, a D-104, Books, a 'Scope, the EB-63A, Guapo, our Sticker, and a Cup of Coffee! KK0S's Cards

Inspired by the ZL2BNE card sent to me by VK3HN, and the excellent question from Walter KA4KXX,  I endeavored today to create a QSL card that was sort of like that of OM ZL2BNE.  

I kind of like the result: 

-- We have the wooden box rigs.  I am working on one of them.  (That happens a lot!)

-- There is a D-104.

-- We see the EB-63 .1kW Linear. 

--  There are books on the shelf:  SSDRA, EMRFD and SPRAT in a binder.   And we see a book by Hayward.  

-- There is an oscilloscope.  

-- There is a nice map of Northern Virginia and my Maidenhead Grid Square. 

-- We see Guapo, and a cup of coffee. 

-- We also see the SolderSmoke sticker. 

Here is how I did this:  

I used https://www.canva.com/  You have to select the AI option.  Then I told it I wanted it to look like the ZL2BNE card (I sent them a copy).  At that point you have to start modifying what the AI comes up with.  You have to do this many times until you get it sort of right.

That's the spirit!  The solder is melting.  Note the oscilloscope.  Note the books on the shelf. This amazingly good QSL card was sent to us by homebrewer Paul VK3HN, who made the contact with ZL2BNE.  

This card reminded me of my first real DX:  ZL2ACP many years ago.  15 meter CW with my new Drake 2B receiver.  I had crossed the Pacific before I had crossed the Atlantic.  I ran upstairs and woke my parents to tell them of this amazing feat!  I still have that QSL card.  

Bricoleur -- "Someone Who Fixes Stuff with Whatever he Finds Around"

A short time ago Paul VK3HN told us about the term bricolage. It seemed to capture much of the homebrew spirit.  This morning I heard Van Neistat's video-cast  (also something that came to me from Paul VK3HN) talking about the related term "bricoleur."  His  video (above) also has some great workshop ideas.

Notes from an Australian SA612 Enthusiast

One of the first articles that I put on this blog was an NA5N post about the SA-612 -- this was originally posted on December 2, 2006: https://soldersmoke.blogspot.com/2009/06/na5n-on-ne602.html  Today our friend Paul VK3HN today noted the end of production.  The SA-612 is no longer being produced, but it is not forgotten, and there are a lot of them still around.  Thanks Paul.   

One thing I would add:  It took me a while to get my head around the Gilbert Cell mixer that is the heart of the SA-612.  Here is how I came to understand it:

Paul writes: 

The end of a four decade life, the NXP SA612 (in SOIC8) ceased production and the final delivery date for orders placed by the last-time-buy deadline was August 18, 2023.

The SA612 truly is a remarkable chip. It's as if The Radio Gods got together back in the early 80s and said, 'what integrated circuit can we bring into the radio world that will supercharge homebrew radio and help enthusiasts to build their own rigs?'. And after the wise council settled on a combined oscillator-mixer in a single DIP-8 package, the rest is history

The 602/612 launched dozens of DIY radios and even businesses, and the careers of the QRP pioneers, from Doug DeMaw to Wayne Burdick to Dave Benson. I'll bet even Wes Hayward built a few.

SA612 discussions on Groups.io lists such as Qrp-Tech ran for decades and continue to attract attention and raise new insights today.

Even Elecraft with all of their digital radio know-how and resources launched the KH1 hand-held CW rig into production with SA612s in its receiver as late as 2023.

It really is an almost ideal part for simple homebrew receivers and transmitters. A 200MHz mixer with balanced inputs and outputs, an on-chip stable LO that can be used in three ways - a crystal BFO, an LC (or varactor) VFO, or a buffer for an external oscillator or clock such as the si5351 digital PLL/multisynth. Up to 15dB conversion gain which mostly eliminates the need for IF gain. Able to be gain-controlled with a DC AGC applied to its input. And did I mention low current?

Its only weakness is in its mixer dynamic range and strong signal performance but if you put a basic BPF in front, for simple homebrew rigs at home or portable/field rigs, this hasn't really been a problem.

Of course there are other mixers that outperform the 612 but some consume much more current, and none have the built-in oscillator.

Vale the SA612. You served, and continue to support the homebrew community like no other chip. You will not be forgotten.

Fortuitously, eBay is full of $5 a piece NOS parts on tape, which pretty much guarantees they are not fake. And at this price, for all you get, they're still great value!

Our question:  Did Doug DeMaw ever build an SSB transceiver?  Starting in September 1985 he wrote a five part series on an SSB TRANSMITTER for QST.  But he prefaces it by asking, "Why would anyone build an SSB transmitter today?" He says it would be fun "for the experience and understanding it would provide." But not for use, you see... And it is not a transceiver. 

Bill's theory about DeMaw, SSB,CW and sideband inversion:  He was a CW guy so sideband inversion did not really matter. He could get it wrong and still make it work.

Bill's appearance on the Ham Radio Workbench.  (Bill made some overly harsh comments about radio rejuvenation, and was trying to make amends.)  But now we throw down the gauntlet.  WE CHALLENGE the HRWB guys to build -- to homebrew - our TJ DC RX.  They will experience JOO, JVO and the elite status that comes with having built their own ham radio receiver.  And if they go on to build a 10 minute transmitter, they can use it for CW contacts.  Like on POTA (Thomas!)

How to Organize a Small Shack

A YouTube comment from Paul VK3HN sent me back to "The Spirited Man" YouTube channel, and one of the first things I found was this video about how to organize a small space.  This is very relevant to my shacks in Virginia and in the Dominican Republic. 

Lots of good ideas here, but that propane heater kind of scared me.  And it seemed inconsistent with concerns behind the fire-preventing garbage can.  What do you folks think?

A very satisfying fix on the 15/10 rig -- loose connection to RF amp.  The highly suspect Ramsey Kit Amp was NOT the culprit!  Got to use the new Rigol DS-1102.  A fun fix. Will build a second CCI amp.
