The World's Largest Radio Telescope -- It is in the Netherlands

This video is in Dutch, but you can easily turn on the English subtitles.   I put this on the blog for a couple of reasons:  Radio astronomy is very interesting; I am a former member of SARA, the Society of Amateur Radio Astronomers. SolderSmoke celebrates the INTERNATIONAL Brotherhood of Electronic Wizards; this blog serves the WORLDWIDE community of radio electronic homebrewers.

Thanks to Rogier PA1ZZ for sending this.

  1. The question of which telescope is “largest” is entirely a function of how you define that word. In many ways, the largest telescope is the Event Horizon Telescope which uses antennas separated by the planet’s diameter, over 12000 km, to image black holes. Even the Chinese FAST telescope at 500m is larger than the SuperTerp but not all of that collecting area is used at once. Again definitions. At least the video is a nice introduction to LOFAR but I wouldn’t accept the premise beyond that.

  2. Yea, definitions. Also, at the end the poor guy seemed to be clutching at straws when asked "what's in it for us." Better WiFi? Reminds me of Tang! I may be dating myself here! If you have to, look it up. 73 Bill Hi7/N2CQR
