Old Smoke: SolderSmoke's Early Theme Music from W8MOJ, Boatanchors in South Africa, and Homebrewing in Dubai
Over on the SoulderSmoke YouTube channel I have been putting up some podcasts from days-gone-by. Recently they have been from our last days in London and our earliest days in Rome. We have had a nice series that includes "Echo-calls" from Andy ZS6ADY in South Africa, talking about old tube radios (Boatanchors) in that country. Soon we will start a series that includes Echo-calls with Ron Sparks AG5RS, who was homebrewing in Dubai.
But these early podcasts begin and end with some very distinctive techno-music from Mark O Johnson, W8MOJ. Here is our old blog post that describes Mark's musical contribution to SolderSmoke. Thanks Mark! https://soldersmoke.blogspot.com/2011/01/tech-details-on-soldersmokes-theme.html

Listen to this! The Kearsarge Mountain Transmission System -- Winter Test Transmission -- 9670 kHz
This is a bit mysterious, but I think that is part of the allure. Last week reports began to surface on reddit about a shortwave test transmission from a group called the Kearsarge Mountain Transmission System. Kearsarge Mountain is in New Hampshire. Thomas K4SWL over at the SWLing Post Blog posted a link to a SoundCloud recording of the transmission:
https://soundcloud.com/user-25048993/kmts-winter-test-transmission-9670-khz-17122020
I don't really know much about the origins of this recording, but -- like Thomas -- I really like it. It is EXACTLY what you need to have playing in the background as you work on some piece of radio gear. Trust me on this: If you are a radio person, you WILL like this. Have a listen at the link above.
Here are some excerpts from the reddit posts on this:
Notice of a KTMS winter test transmission beaming to Europe/USA on 9670 kHz at 2300 UTC on 17.12.2020. This transmission will consist of interval jingles, engineer test signals, rare re-media mixes of cult radio favorites, strange tones, and vox. Thank you for your continued attention as the KTMS crew continue working to bring the SWL community unique transmissions.
Our aim as the programmers of the KTMS Test Transmission is to entertain, edify and get SWLs excited about the possibilities inherent in radio. The crew of KTMS consists of amateur radio operators, community and college radio aficionados, antique radio restorationists, low budget radio astronomers looking for alien life and in general people who love the hobby of radio in all its many faceted aspects.
People who put their own funds towards creating radio on the shortwaves are helping to keep the shortwaves interesting and alive and bringing programming that is original and idiosyncratic to a medium that is often otherwise overrun by nationalists, spies, and fundamentalist preachers. They also help to keep shortwave stations on the air -something that ain’t so cheap. Rather, our view, is that by injecting some creative energy into a project such as our KTMS Winter Test Transmission we are giving back to the SWLing community by 1) creating a show for any listeners who happen to catch it, 2) giving the listeners a mystery that doesn’t revolve around numbers, 3) to do our part to keep the airwaves a little less stodgy.
We view this Test Transmission as an exercise in conviviality, surreality, and genuine love of all things radio and shortwave. 2020 has been such a serious minded year we aim to lighten that load with a bit of old fashioned fun.
For anyone who wishes to enjoy a nice winter evening around your set or online SDR we welcome you to get warm with us around the glowing tubes.
Thanks to all who tune in, and until then 73s.

New Rock Video By Astrophysicist and Queen lead-guitarist Dr. Brian May
We don't carry many music videos on this blog, but this one definitely belongs here. We've mentioned Brian May several times: Lead guitarist in the rock group Queen. PhD Astrophysicist.
I didn't know that he went to work as a full member of the New Horizons (Pluto and beyond) mission.
The video is definitely for us -- it features a lot of antennas. And it includes the computer-generated voice of Stephen Hawkings.
Read more about Brian's careers and about his latest adventure here:

Solder Haze -- Sing Along with N8NM and Jimi Hendrix
Back when some us were thinking of new names for the podcast, Steve, N8NM thought of Purple Haze by Jimi Hendrix and came up with this set of lyrics (listen to the video above to get the tune).
Making rigs, some don't work that great.
They're acting funny, but I don't know why
Kill some birds for that Legba guy.
Solder Haze, all around.
Don't if I should turn the bias down.
Or maybe I should raise the Vcc
Oh, it's a FET, that would make it Vdd.
Solder Haze, all in my eyes
Don't know if it's day or night.
You got me blowing, blowing my mind
Come tomorrow, I won't be to work on time.
Thank you gentlemen. You are both, in a way, poets. And Hendrix would, I think, approve.
Now, will the Wizard of Newbury Park pull out his guitar and get to work on this?

I.G.Y., The Nightfly, Donald Fagen, Jean Shepherd and SolderSmoke
OK, so from time-to-time we talk about IGY, the International Geophysical Year. I was born during that scientifically momentous period. A lot of cool stuff happened. Amazing propagation conditions too. So for a while (around SolderSmoke 149) I was using the opening bars of Donald Fagen's song I.G.Y. as the intro for the podcast. That song comes from Fagen's album Nightfly. The album cover appears above.
This morning I got two e-mails from Steve N8NM about another connection between SolderSmoke and IGY. At first I thought he was pulling my leg. But before I show you the e-mails, let me show you another picture:
Steve writes:
Hey Bill!
I'm Listening to #149, where you introduced Donald Fagen's "I.G.Y" as the new theme song. Have you heard that the protagonist on that album is based on none-other than Shep, K2ORS. Don't know if that's necessarily true, but the album title (The Nightfly), Fagen being from NY, and the era depicted certainly make that plausible...
I guess it's factual - This is from an interview Fagen did with New York Magazine:
Symphony Sid was very popular. Mort Fega was probably the best all-around jazz D.J. Ed Beach on WRVR would do this very scholarly afternoon show, and I’d listen to that when I came home from school. But the figure of the Nightfly was based more on a guy who didn’t play jazz records, Jean Shepherd. He was a monologist who used to just talk and tell stories and say funny things. He was a social satirist.

Cool Jazz from New Zealand as Heard on a Homebrew Superhet Receiver (VIDEO)
I'm making slow but steady progress on this one. The origin of the project was the beautiful National HRO dial and gearbox that Armand WA1UQO gave me.
I decided to use a 455 kHz IF because;
1) That was the IF of the old HRO receivers (the ones that won WWII)
2) I had a nice TOYO CM455 crystal mechanical filter that would be good for SSB.
3) I figured it would be easy to add in a wider filter that would be good for AM shortwave listening.
4) I like to keep the IF below the frequency of the VFO.
The wide filter turned out to be harder than I thought, but I think I have finally achieved the selectivity I was looking for. I'll have a switch on the front panel that will allow me to go from "AM-Wide" to "SSB Narrow." The switch will change the filters and the detectors, and will turn the BFO on and off.
Still to do: I need a high-pass filter to knock down RFI from nearby AM broadcast transmitter. And an RF gain control would be nice.
I'm really glad Radio New Zealand is there. It provides welcome relief from the shortwave fire and brimstone. Radio Romania is also doing a fine job on shortwave.

Hardware Hacking by Nicolas Collins
David Cowhig WA1LBP and I are the only two Foreign Service officers to have also been 73 Magazine "Hambassadors" (impressive, right?). David was covering Okinawa for 73 (and for Uncle Sam!) while I was doing the same in the Dominican Republic.
Today David sent me a link to the book "Hardware Hacking" by Nicolas Collins: http://www.nicolascollins.com/texts/originalhackingmanual.pdf
It is not exactly about ham radio, but there is a lot of electronic wisdom in Mr. Collins' book. You folks will like it. I especially liked the hand-drawn schematics -- this adds soul to the book.
Nicolas Collins is an interesting fellow. He is Profesor, Department of Sound, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

The Coolest Guy on 17 Meters
In our last podcast I mentioned that I had a very interesting contact on 17 meters with Raul Midon AE3RM. This morning Raul's song "Tembererana" popped up on my Pandora feed. The song is great, but is was the album cover that attracted my attention.
Raul has an amazing personal history. Born in Argentina, he and his twin brother have been blind since birth. They have both obviously triumphed -- his brother is a NASA engineer.
You can watch OM Raul sing about technology in his TED Talk:
https://www.ted.com/talks/raul_midon_plays_all_the_answers_and_tembererana?language=en
Here is his Wikipedia page. Check out the info about his home studio and his technology company:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raul_Mid%C3%B3n
From the Wiki:
Midón's album State of Mind was released on May 10, 2005. The album features a guest performance with Stevie Wonder, one of his idols, another one with Jason Mraz, and a song written in tribute to Donny Hathaway entitled "Sittin' In The Middle." Midón is an avid amateur radio enthusiast,[2] and in this song he also incorporates his call sign (KB5ZOT) by using Morse code.
Here is his QRZ page: http://www.qrz.com/db/KB5ZOT
In it he writes: "He has been an amateur radio enthusiast since Mrs. Redmond introduced he and his brother to the hobby back when they both attended the New Mexico School for the Visually Handicapped." Good work Mrs. Redmond!
Here is Raul's antenna in Maryland. Maybe he was thinking of this when he designed the album cover!

"Basta Blues" with Pete Juliano on the Guitar
What makes this short video special is the fact that the music was all completely designed (composed) and homebrewed (played) by Pete himself.
From Pete:
In Italian when one has finally had enough --the Hue and Cry is BASTA! I have been having some Basta Moments in trying to make Arduino 1.6.3 work with sketches developed in Version 1.0.5.
So for some comic relief I decided to program a 240X320 Color TFT with a random pattern generator using the word Basta! Of course is was done in Arduino 1.0.5!
